I’ve seen the front of instruments damaged because they weren’t sufficiently protected in the case. The bow clips of cases for violin, viola and cello can rub against the instrument, sometimes causing nasty scratches. Some sort of protection, a scarf or a blanket, can also help insulate your instrument against changes in temperature and humidity.
In my spare time I’m a keen dressmaker, so I hit on the idea of using some of the material left from my sewing projects to make protective blankets for violins, violas and cellos. These can be purchased from my Etsy shop . All proceeds from the sale of these blankets go to the RAB Trust, which supports student violinmakers www.rabtrust.org
These blankets were featured in the July 2017 issue of The Strad magazine.
